As one of the most essential pieces of equipment on a construction site, skid-steer loaders need to be serviceable and ready to go at all times. These machines are capable of fitting into tight spaces and assisting you with several different tasks to help make your work go more smoothly. It’s important, though, that you stay on top of maintaining your skid-steer loader to ensure that it’s in good working order and doesn’t break down at random on you. Follow these tips to tune up your loader.

1. Perform Daily Inspections

Before anyone hops into the operator’s cab of your skid-steer loader, they need to inspect the machine inside and out to ensure that everything seems to be in order. Taking the time to test hydraulics, check tire pressure, tighten hoses, check fluid levels, grease fittings and look at the air filter. Regular inspections will help you to catch any issues that could compromise the safety of your worksite.

2. Keep It Clean

A skid-steer that’s dirty and covered in muck is going to be more challenging to maintain. Make sure that you’re washing down your skid-steer monthly to remove all the dirt and grime so that you can use it more effectively.

3. Change Out Fluids & Filters

The oil and hydraulic fluid that help your skid-steer to function will need to be changed out on a regular basis which is likely listed in your owner’s manual. Typically, all fluids should be replaced with fresh fluid after every 250 operating hours. The oil filter should be changed every time you change the oil, while the hydraulic fluid filter should be changed after every 500 operating hours.

4. Use With Care

When operating your skid-steer loader, you should always follow the restrictions and limits listed in the owner’s manual. Trying to overburden the skid-steer loader or use it beyond its functional range will likely result in damage or even a total breakdown, and unsafe operation can also endanger your workers. Make sure your employees are trained on how to use the machine and that regular refresher training takes place as needed.

5. Get Professional Service

Finally, while these tips should help you to stay out of the service bay on a regular basis, it’ still important to bring your skid-steer loader into a service bay like the one here at FMI Equipment to have it looked over by a professional.
