Prepare Your Tractor For Spring Planting

1. Check Fluids

All the fluids in your tractor’s engine need to be inspected, as winter temperatures may have caused them to condense. You do not want fluids with water in them, as this can cause the tractor to overheat. Replenish the fluids to the levels specified in your owner’s manual, using the right sorts of products for your particular make and model.

2. Adjust Belts

Cold temperatures over winter can make your tractor’s belts more brittle. If you see any signs of stretching or cracks, you’ll likely have to replace the belts to prevent them from snapping during your work. Adjust belts to the proper tension for best results.

3. Replenish Fuel

If you left fuel in the engine over winter, it may have experienced water separation, unless you added a fuel stabilizer to it. Drain the old fuel and refill the tank with fresh and clean fuel. Be wary of old fuel, as separated water can cause corrosion. Dispose of old fuel responsibly.

4. Charge Battery

The best way to keep a battery charged over a long period of storage is to remove it from your tractor’s engine and place it on a tender. If you didn’t do this, you’ll need to use a multimeter to test your battery and ensure that it’s holding an adequate charge. Inspect the posts for corrosion and make sure that the wires are connected properly.

5. Test Hydraulics

In order to make use of your various attachments, you’ll need to test your tractor’s hydraulic system. Your owner’s manual will likely have more explicit instructions on how to do this. Extend the hydraulics fully to make sure they work properly. Top off hydraulic oil and inspect the hoses for cracks or leaks that would merit repair or replacement.
