Read on to learn more about the history of this Mumbai-based company.
In the Beginning
At the end of World War II in 1945, Indian brothers KC and JC Mahindra and their partner Ghulam Mohammed founded the Mahindra & Mohammed company in Mumbai. The first thing the company produced was steel, followed by light commercial vehicle manufacturing for Willys Jeep.
Following the partition between India and Pakistan two years later, Mohammed left the enterprise to be Pakistan’s first Finance Minister. The company was thus renamed “Mahindra & Mahindra” for the two brothers.
Mahindra & Mahindra went public in 1955 and its stocks were on the Bombay Stock Exchange by 1958. The company began to produce tractors after it joined up with American manufacturing giant International Harvester. By the 1980s, Mahindra was India’s largest seller of tractors.
The Mahindra Group
During the many decades the company has been in business, Mahindra has grown exponentially by joining up with more unique industries. Some of the industries that Mahindra has taken under its wing include Maxi Motors Financial Services Limited, Automobiles Peugeot France, International Tractor Company of India and British Telecom. With all these companies, it was soon time for the company to form a conglomerate to manage its various interests called Mahindra Group.
In 1994, the Mahindra Group split into several different Strategic Business Units to better manage each type of industry. The units are Farm Equipment, IT, Infrastructure Development Services, Steel Trading, Automotive and Financial Services. This has led Mahindra to come in 17th place on the 2018 Fortune India 500 companies list!
